Large general-purpose FE software began to appear in the s. By the late s the software was available on microcomputers, complete with color graphics and pre- and post-processors. By the mid s roug papers and books about FE and its applications had been published. Specifically, the authors have carried out finite element analyses and program development on one such machine (Apollo Computer Inc., 19 Alpha Road, Chelford, MA ). This paper reviews our experience of approximately seven months using the hardware and system software for finite element analysis.
This book presents the latest developments in structural dynamics with particular emphasis on the formulation of equations of motion by finite element methods and their solution using microcomputers. The book discusses the use of frequency-dependent shape functions for realistic finite element modelling. As long as finite element analysis was done only on large computers, the applications it found in engineering were necessarily limited. Today many finite element packages run on personal computers. By bringing this capability to the desk of virtually every engineer, these packages open the way to much more widespread employment of finite.
